[ARCHIVED] Romeoville Receives Update on Alternate Water Supply Study

Wtr frm Snk

At tonight’s Village Board meeting, Strand Associates presented the board with an update on an alternate water supply study. In 2019, the Village authorized a water survey of the sandstone aquifers in Northeastern Illinois to be conducted by the Illinois State Water Survey. Romeoville currently draws its groundwater supply from six deep wells and seven shallow wells located throughout the community. The outcome of the survey indicated that Romeoville’s sandstone withdrawals are not sustainable come 2040-2070. Future water level declines pose a risk to Romeoville and surrounding communities’ water supply in the future.

Following the survey, the Village began exploring alternate sources of water and are currently evaluating nine different options, including possible connections for Lake Michigan water. Other communities who are evaluating this plan are Channahon, Crest Hill, Homer Glen, Joliet, Lemont, Minooka, Montgomery, Oswego, Rockdale, Shorewood, and Yorkville. A decision on Romeoville’s potential new water source is anticipated to be made sometime in 2022. Public meetings on the topic will be held as more information becomes available.
