O’Hara Woods Nature Preserve will undergo important ecological maintenance over the coming weeks to support and enhance the health of this nationally recognized conservation area located in the heart of our community.
These forest management efforts will include the removal of excess downed woody material and selective thinning of trees in densely populated areas. The goal is to foster a balanced forest ecosystem—one with a healthy layer of organic material on the forest floor, appropriate tree density, and a thriving diversity of herbaceous plants. By clearing dead wood and increasing sunlight penetration beneath the tree canopy, we aim to create ideal conditions for understory vegetation to flourish.
Work will begin on September 8, and the Preserve will be temporarily closed from September 15–19 to ensure the safety of all involved. During this time, Village staff, the Village Ecologist, and representatives from The Conservation Foundation will be on-site conducting the maintenance.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to preserve and protect this vital natural resource for generations to come.
