[ARCHIVED] Forest Board Approves First Bikeway Plan

BikewayPlan.jpg

The first-ever Will County Bikeway Plan is now a reality. After two years of planning and a 30-day public comment period, the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Board of Commissioners approved the plan at its November 10 meeting.

The bikeway plan identifies areas where non-motorized transportation opportunities could be expanded throughout Will County and beyond. Greenways, roadways and utility corridors were all reviewed as possible sites for bicycle access improvements.

While some bikeway corridors already exist in the county, a comprehensive planning guide was needed to improve clarity between multiple user groups and levels of government. The goals of the plan are to expand transportation choices, expand connectivity, improve safety, enhance bicyclist comfort and promote bicycling benefits.

Many of the people commenting as part of the public review period requested specific trail connections or improvements to their towns or regions. Most of the 41 comments received on the bikeway plan were positive. Here are a few of the comments received by the District:

"Overall, the plan is well thought out and provides the foundation for bicycling as a mode of transportation in Will County."

"I am happy to see that someone recognizes the need for bike trails in our community."

"Any outdoor activity should be promoted, for the health of all our citizens."

"This would be wonderful for our community!"

"A bike trail would be a wonderful addition for a solo ride or a family activity used by all ages."

The bikeway plan was created in cooperation with the Will County Division of Transportation and is part of its 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan. Now that the document has been approved by the Board, the District will ask Will County municipalities to pass resolutions in support of the plan.
