On August 20, 1619, 20 enslaved Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia. The 400-year plus journey that followed would change a nation and the world. 1619: The Journey of a People is a dynamic theatrical (song, music, and stories) experience featuring playwright, professor, and performer Ted Williams III, and a small, but brilliant cast. This show packs generations of history into an abridged performance. 1619: The Journey of a People commemorates the struggles, recognizes the heroes, and critically analyzes the American journey towards freedom and equality. From the beginning of American slavery to the Reconstruction, the Great Migration, the Civil Rights Era, and modern movements for justice, Williams uses history to explain modern America. This library program has been made possible through a partnership between the White Oak Library District and the Village of Romeoville. Registration is required for this event. Join us at Isle a la Cache Museum for a special event with inspiring Indigenous author Maria DesJarlait. Discover the inspiration behind her powerful children’s book “I Am Not a Costume,” listen as she shares the story aloud and have the chance to get your own copy signed. Copies of her books will be available for purchase at the event. The book is geared toward kids ages 6 and 7, but all are welcome to attend. “I Am Not a Costume” follows 5-year-old Ayasha, an Indigenous girl excited for her school’s costume party — until she sees classmates in fake regalia. Hurt and confused, she turns to her family, who help organize a school assembly to share stories and teach the true meaning of their culture and regalia. Author Maria DesJarlait, an Indigenous writer from the Arikara tribe from Fort Berthold, North Dakota, and Ojibwe from Red Lake, Minnesota, is a preschool teacher in Illinois. She creates stories inspired by her grandmother and daughters that reflect the lives of contemporary Native American children, aiming to uplift and empower them to dream big. Have you ever wondered what’s going on in our 18th-century Traders Cabin or wanted to peek inside the Native American longhouse above the pollinator garden? This is your chance to explore all the buildings at Isle a la Cache Museum and learn about the French fur traders and Potawatomi who once called this area home. Drop in for self-guided exploration during normal operating hours. No registration required.

Do you like to draw, doodle or document? Do you like to be outside? Join us while we creatively connect to the outdoors! A naturalist will introduce nature journaling, lead guided exercises and answer questions. All skill levels welcome. Each participant will get their own nature journal as part of this program.
