The Romeoville Fire Department supplements staffing with part-time firefighter/paramedics. At times, Romeoville Fire Department will hire members who are not certified at the Basic Operations Firefighter (BOF) level, all personnel are required to become certified as a BOF after completion of their one year probationary period. If a part-time employee attends Romeoville Fire Academy Basic Operations Fire Academy, they will be required to sign a two year tuition reimbursement agreement. The agreement is pro-rated and will consist of the tuition and any applicable gear rentals. Employees leaving within two years will be invoiced for the remaining amount due.
Part-time employees work every third day following the traditional fire service schedule (Black, Red, Gold shift.) Part-time employees are generally assigned to a regular 24 hour shift from 6a-6am. Employees must work holidays and weekends if their assigned shift falls on such days.
RFD typically conducts two or three group hiring processes per year, or as needed. The hiring process consists of an interview, criminal background check, and medical physical. The medical physical is given only if the applicant is offered employment and it is at RFD's expense. Applicants who are hired must sign a waiver which states that if they leave the department before completing one year of service, they will be obligated to reimburse RFD for the entire cost of the medical physical. By submitting an application, you agree for Romeoville Fire Department personnel to contact your references as part of the background process.
Applicants must have a recent Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within one year.
RFD operates within the Edward Hospital EMS System (Region 8.) Newly hired members must be able to successfully pass the system entry process to the Edward EMS System. In the event a part-time employee is unable to successfully pass system entry, RFD may elect to discontinue the employment process at that time.
